William Thatcher

Recollections of service in the King's Royal Rifles Corps.

Born in 1917, Bill joined the Army in 1939 and served with the King’s Royal Rifles Corps in England for the duration of the war. Although Bill was happy to serve on the Home Front and considered himself lucky, he attempted to join the submarines section of the Navy: ‘I tried to get in the Navy...at the time they were taking chaps from the Army but I wasn’t lucky then. I wanted to get in the Navy, I don’t know why...I wanted to get in the subs.’
