Madge Neal
Recollections of life in the Land Army.
Madge Neal was born in North London and lived in the area during periods of the war. She was evacuated twice to escape the bombing of London. When Madge reached the age for conscription she joined the Women’s Land Army. During her time in the Land Army, Madge was sent to a farm in North Newton, Somerset, owned by a Mr Foster.
Madge worked on the fields and recalls taking part in such tasks as haymaking, harvesting and dairy farming. After a year and a half, Madge asked to be transferred closer to home and was found a position at Delaford Manor in Buckinghamshire where she worked in the kitchen garden. Madge eventually left the Land Army to get married.
