Food on the table

Alfred Brett talks about food in wartime.

Recollections of childhood memories of wartime Greenwich.

'He brought us all back'

As one of fourteen children Alfred lived with his parents in Greenwich during the war. Although the children were initially evacuated to Kent their father soon brought the children back home after hearing rumours of the poor treatment of evacuees. ‘He borrowed an old pop pop motorbike, you know, and one by one from right down in Kent he brought us all back, one by one.’ The whole family was later evacuated to Nottingham but soon returned to Greenwich.

Food on the table

Alfred recalls how, despite food shortages, his father, a horseman, ensured the family always had food on the table:

‘We had everything there was. Being, I mean, the soldiers like where he was loading his cart with all the stuff to go round the different barracks and that like, you know, they knew me dad so well and how many kids he had. He didn’t have to nick anything they just gave it to him, yeah. So we always had tons of food. We had fourteen chickens out in the yard.’

'Where all them incendiary bombs was dropped they was hanging in the trees in that park up there, you know. Used to get ‘em out of the trees, take one round the Wardens’ Post.'

Childhood excitement

The area suffered heavy air raids and on a number of occasions the family’s house lost its roof. But as a child Alfred did not so much see the dangers of war as the excitement that it brought:

‘We being kids, you know, I was only six year old coming up seven approx. We used to go up to the park at the top of the road,  that’s Maryon Wilson Park, and where all them incendiary bombs was dropped they was hanging in the trees in that park up there, you know. Used to get ‘em out of the trees, take one round the Wardens’ Post, just round the corner, carrying a live bomb like, you know.’
